Danish Study Finds Higher Schizophrenia Risk in Young Males With Cannabis Use Disorder

In a study, researchers focused on the relationship between cannabis use disorder (CUD) and schizophrenia, particularly in males. It was based on a Danish nationwide, register-based cohort study, including individuals aged 16 to 49 years from 1972 to 2021. The study revealed a stronger association between CUD and schizophrenia in males, with evidence of increasing population attributable risk fractions for CUD in schizophrenia over time.

Researchers noted that, in recent years, about 15% of schizophrenia cases in males and 4% in females could have been prevented without CUD, particularly among young males aged 16 to 20. The study used nationwide registers for a large sample size. The findings suggest that early detection and treatment of CUD could significantly reduce schizophrenia cases, especially in young males.
