Defining Schizophrenia Today

The definition of schizophrenia has typically been both a diagnosis of clinically observable symptoms, as well as a disease state in its own right. This article explores the dual nature of defining schizophrenia as both a diagnostic and syndromic construct in addition to a disease construct. The impact of an individual patient’s symptoms and the comorbidity of schizophrenia with other behavioral health issues is discussed in how it relates to the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia today and in the future.
