Review Identifies Strategies for Empowering People With Serious Mental Illness in Participatory Action Research

A review of 87 studies aimed to determine how participatory action research (PAR), an approach to research emphasizing participation and action by marginalized individuals and communities, has been conducted with people with serious mental illness (PSMI) and identify strategies to empower them as co-researchers. Five key strategies were identified: building capacity, balancing power distribution, creating collaborative environments, promoting peer support, and enhancing engagement in the research process.

The review found that PAR is an effective research approach for involving PSMI, with many studies reporting significant individual and social benefits for participants. Engaging PSMI in research not only empowers them but also helps reduce stigma and improve mental health services. However, challenges such as managing resources, negotiating differences, and ensuring consistent engagement were noted. The review highlights the importance of addressing these challenges to maximize the benefits of PAR for PSMI, suggesting that tailored strategies can enhance their participation and foster meaningful change in mental health research and practice.
