Assessing the Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an Additional Therapy for Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia

With treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), the use of additional therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), are often required when pharmacological methods prove insufficient or inconsistent. This original research reviewed 8 studies with matching eligibility criteria for participants and found that, in 5 of them, the use of CBT did contribute to a reduction of positive psychotic symptoms in patients with TRS. Recommendations for healthcare providers who work in psychiatric settings to obtain CBT training is discussed as a potential benefit to patient care.
