Elyn Saks, Chair Professor of Law, Psychology, and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California Gould Law School, discusses her journey living with schizophrenia. She points out that because not every person with schizophrenia benefits from pharmacologic treatment, it is crucial to have other interventions in the armamentarium. She and Judy Gault, PhD, from the University of Colorado, Denver, share their research on deep brain stimulation, which has shown success in treating movement disorders, to treat schizophrenia, especially in those who are treatment resistant.
